mp3 plugin causes very bad sound distortion

Bug Description

When playing some mp3's that have deep electronic beats I would often get very strong distortion from my speakers or headset. The distortion would persist even at low volume levels and even when the PCM output volume was low. I discovered a recommendation at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1437919&postcount=10

It involved removing the gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 package and making sure that the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly package is installed. This worked perfectly for me and others and well. Now I have absolutely no distortion.

I would recommend removing this package unless it is essential for playback of certain media types that cannot be handled by the ugly package.

Well, just don't install the plugin :)
This bug is known upstream and will hopefully be fixed soon

I can confirm this in Edgy as well. The same process (removal of fluendo) fixed the problem. It should be noted that this doesn't appear to affect ALL mp3's just some of them. I haven't yet noticed what the common trait is among the MP3's that it causes distortion on.

Do we have an upstream bug number or something?

no we don't, but i'm very sure this is fixed in the latest release of fluendo-mp3 (reliable upstream dev said so). i'm about to mark #74989 as a duplicate of this, it has some slightly interesting talk about this bug on it.

slomo, could you please sync fluendo-mp3 with debian unstable? they have updated their package to a version which fixes this. then maybe some users could pray for a -backport to edgy & dapper.

This will be automatically synced very soon... probably tomorrow or the day after. No need for manual syncing here :)

Daniel Holbach,

I don't believe there is an upstream bug number, but there is a specific line in the changelog for this package, from fluendo:

https://core.fluendo.com/gstreamer/svn/trunk/gst-fluendo-mp3/ChangeLog
at 2006-09-06

Towards the bottom of this entry you will see the phrase:
"Fix a nasty array index overflow that was resulting in noise in the
left channel for some builds only."

I suspect that this is the bug, but it has no referenced bug number. This describes pretty well the problem I have suffered. See duplicate of this bug, Bug #74989.
