Bug Description

when using aiglx/compiz under knot2, i could see trailing marks when using the autoscrolling feature of firefox.
to use this feature, you must first enable it: edit->preferences->use autoscrolling.
then go on a website with a page big enough to have scrollbars, and middle click and move the mouse.

when not using compiz, no problem, when using compiz, the cursor leaves a trailing mark on the webpage which disappears as soon as you focus in or out of the window.

i am not sure if it is a compiz or xorg bug, i thought it is more likely to be an AIGLX bug...
i will attach a screenshot.

hmm i tested a bit more, it seems it does not happen on all websites... happens with slashdot and this page, this bug report, for sure. on others, sometimes it works fine.

Confirming. This has been happening with me for a long long time. (I was a compiz early adopter, and this has been present from day one). I still have this problem with Beryl.

status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

Dave Brady, maybe you can answer this: is this happening also with compiz/XGL? if it's also happening with compiz/XGL, it could be a compiz bug, not a xorg bug.

Not sure though. I assumed previously that this works fine in compiz/XGL and is only a problem with compiz/AIGLX.

I'm not actually sure on that. I've been running AIGLX for a long time. But I did run XGL/Compiz when it first was released, and I don't recall for sure, but I don't think that it exhibited the same symptoms.

But I do think that it's a compiz problem anyway. The scroll icon does not leave a trail when compiz is disabled and AIGLX is left running. (It's enabled by default in Edgy).

Regardless, I never filed a bug because I thought it would be worked out of compiz. But I saw your bug when I was looking for solutions to the slow scrolling, and I figured I may as well confirm it.

I can confirm this only seems to happen with compiz/AIGLX. When I first encountered this I thought it was a feature of Beryl, but when it didn't gradually fade out I realised it was a bug.

The same bug occurs using other composite managers, I think. At least, it happens for me using kwin (under gnome) with kompmgr (or whatever kwin's own composite manager is called). This happened under dapper, and still happens in edgy. As in the original report, it is some web sites (most?) but not all.

yeah, this bug occurs with pretty much all compsite managers, i had it with xcompmgr (breezy), compiz (breezy/dapper), and now beryl (edgy), it doesn't seem to be a popular bug, for example it hasn't been mentioned in beryl user forums... but that could be because firefox's autoscroll isn't enabled by default

I still have this issue in Beryl and Compiz with the nvidia-glx drivers in Feisty Fawn, with Firefox.

Also, same issue with my ATI Radeon 7200 with the open source drivers with beryl or compiz enabled.

I also found an upstream bug for this in Compiz's freedesktop bugzilla, confirmed as "New": https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9458

I have also this bug with firefox but It's not because of beryl. This bug appear when Composite Option is "Enabled" in xorg.conf and when a composite manager is enabled (like compiz, beryl, xfce composite manager etc...).

I got the same bug with compiz, AIGLX and nvidia drivers on feisty.
Actually the problem is not with the autoscrolling feature but with firefox's rendering of "position: fixed" styled elements. (The multi-arrow circle which is displayed using autoscrolling is actually implemented as an element in the webpage with that css property)

See this page and the attched screenshot :
http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/glib/index.html
(The banner on top has the same "position: fixed" style property)

If you don't want to see this multi-arrow circle, you can install the "All-in-one Gestures" add-on for firefox to remove it .

Well I have this bug in feisty right now with both compiz and beryl. And the one of the sites where the trace appears is: Launchpad.net.

Is there a workaround for this bugs ? I have it with position: fixed elements.
Nvidia geforce fx5700.

Strangely I have beryl installed on my fedora 6 at work, the graphic card is also an nvidia, but it is a nvidia geforceGo something in a laptop and the problem does not occur there.

Does fedora has a patch which is not reported upstream and so not in ubuntu ?

I got the same bug with {compiz | beryl}, {AIGLX | XGL}, and {nvidia, i910} drivers on {edgy | feisty} about firefox's rendering of "position: fixed" styled elements

This is still doing the same thing in compiz-fusion on gutsy. Is this not a higher priority bug? I hope some1 can get it sorted before gutsy is released. We are getting close to tribe 4 already...
