Bug Description

I used to have a hp zv6000 and was waiting patiently for hibernate to work on it with linux. With dapper it finally did, and I was over the moon however since then I have had to upgrade to a dv8000. Now, upon clicking hibernate on the shutdown menu, the computer does hibernate, but when it wakes up again it just hangs at a black screen.
It would be really great if someone could look into what needs to be done to get hibernate supported with this laptop for the next ubuntu realease.

I have the same problem, almost exactly.

The only difference is that I get a grey bar across the screen (which looks like a graphics artifact).

I can't be positive but it looks like it hangs just as the "loading progress bar" comes up (which is when I get the grey bar across the screen).

The problem happens when I'm connected to the dock and have all the extra hardware and when I'm not connected and have nothing but the laptop.

I'm currently evaluating Ubuntu in order to switch myself and later the rest of my family to a linux deployment, however things like this mean I can't use it like I want to, which does not encourage me to switch.

A little about my environment:
- HP Pavilion dv8000
- Dual boot with WIndows XP (all the latest patches but I don't think that should matter).
- Ubuntu has 20g of Disk space to play with.
- Second drive visible to Ubuntu with an NTFS partition.

I was kind of disturbed to see the status of this issue as "Unconfirmed" and a priority of :Undecided" as its the one thing stopping me fron spending more time in Ubuntu to get a feel for it.

I should also not that I'm running edgy 6.10 and that the machine has a gig of RAM.

Thanks for adding your comments. I cannot believe we are the only ones posting this problem.
I have being involved with linux for a number of years now and have noticed its progression in many ways. Unfortunatly no matter what people try to tell you, I can tell you now that linux's support for hibernation and power saving in general is shaky at best, it is completely hit and miss depending on what laptop you have.
I just find it hard to beleive that linux/ubuntu has such a hard time supporting a technology that has being around for so long.
The time this bug has being posted and the unconfirmed status shows their commital to the subject.

Almost everyone I would be switching to Lunix (Ubuntu) uses the hibernate feature in Windows.

A quick search of the issue turns up many, many related issues and even some duplicates:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.searchtext=Hibernate+not+working&search=Search

I did see one post that was talking about a relation between swap space... in my case my swap is about half my memory (1 gig mem).

Anyway, I can only hope they resolve this before I have to make a choice because I'll never get people to use it if it doesn't perform basic laptop operations like hibernate/suspend. Most of the people who would be using it are non-tech people, and they will not accept anything that doesn't just work... I feel like I'm running Windows 95 again for the issues like this one that I keep running into!

I am a programmer, but unfortunately not a C programmer with any experience writing code for Linux so I'm a little on the useless side for helping to resolve the issue at a lower level.

Thanks for that Brian. Just to elaborate on this one; now running Gutsy and suspend to disk works, but no luck with suspend to ram which is what I'm really after. Here's hoping for Hardy

Has anyone with the bug tried it running Hardy?

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New".

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
