Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

Using Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS on an AMD x86_64 X2 with an XFT Nvidia 6800.

The problem is that on the setting the resolution to 1280x1024 in xorg.conf at start up xorg down grades the display to display to 1024x786. (details can be seen in the xorg log) If I change the driver to VESA the display work faultlessly.

the system is fully updated.

I have just installed the same version of ubuntu against the same hardware, but this time x86 version rather than x86_64.

I have the same problem on x86 as well as x86_64 the vesa driver works at the correct resolution, but the nvidia driver will not.

the current system is

The two areas of concern seem to show the nvidia drivers and my monitors.

From a basic point of view it either looks like the nvidia drivers to not like these monitors/have a problem, or a better Xorg configuration for these monitors is needed.

One thing you might try is setting the DefaultDepth to 16. Possibly the 24 bit depth is leading to the confusion between the driver and monitor.

You might also try specifying the monitor's HorizSync explicitly - perhaps it is trying 30-100 when the monitor only supports 30-80. If you have the monitor's manual, it'll say there, or you may be able to find it on lucom's website if you know the monitor's model. Specifying VertSync as a range (e.g. 60-75) could possibly help as well.

This issue was due to incorrect DDC information being provided by the monitor.

Advanced configuration of the xorg configuration fixed this issue.

Bug resolved - hardware error/incompatability more than an ubuntu problem.
