Bug Description

When I tried to boot the CD to install Ubuntu 6.10 I had the same problem I would have on my laptop with other distrubution that attempt to start the graphical installation with 3D-Acceleration with 'radeon'/'ati' driver (sometimes) or 'fglrx' proprietary drivers (Always). The new ATI propietary drivers have a known bug where on certain laptop models (mostly HP) with ATI Mobility Radeons (old models) they fail to detect the correct ModeLine for the X Server. I have a zt3000 and when the ubuntu installation reaches the point in the init script where it starts "Configuring X Server" it messes up everything from there on.

You can find the correct HP Laptop ModeLines in http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation_Guide

** Note that the 1280x800 model of the HP ZT3000 has two reported ModeLines. One of them did not work for me so I enetered the one that did on the wiki. I determined the correct modeline using PowerStrip for Windows XP (<-- sorry for such mention).

I've tried to make the description more meaningful, please correct it if I've misunderstood something. Can someone update this bug by trying the latest beta Ubuntu?

I attached a comment to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/92667 that might be related. But my issue involves any Xorg based distro and includes FF Herd 5 which I tried earlier today.

Should be fixed in Gutsy (see 73572). Please test gutsy-beta and re-open this bug if the issue still exists.
