Bug Description

Using Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1b1) Gecko/20060601 BonEcho/2.0b1 (Ubuntu-edgy)

I was working on a large document at www.writely.com and, during spell-checking, Firefox crashed.

Can you confirm this happens on Firefox version 1.99+2.0rc2+dfsg-0ubuntu1? and if you can can you please install firefox-dbg and run a debugging backtrace. PLease run the backtrace if this issue is still reproducible.

Not really. I never tried reproducing the bug, and I don't remember exactly what I was working on at the moment. I just sent the backtrace because the error reporter asked me to. Sorry. Anyway, it was a one time thing, I continued working OK after restarting the browser.

However, I'm not really in the know with this: is it possible to run Firefox in debug mode all the time (without huge performance penalties)? And, more importantly, is it useful for the developers?

I'm getting crashes often enough, and I'll be willing to make an effort _if_ it's useful. However, most of the things that bother me are not (I think) easily reproducible. Things like an involuntary drag/drop while some other tab is loading that freeze the browser. I get stops like this a couple times a week, but I was never able to find out the reason (i.e., to reproduce it).

So, again, is a debug trace by itself (no steps to reproduce) useful?

Bogdan,

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. Firefox has been orphaned for a few months;( I think the maintainer has move on to bigger things;)

Yes crash reports without any other information are very helpful if they contain all the debug symbols. Install firefox-dbg and obtaining a backtrace (or crash report) by following the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingFirefox greatly aids us in tracking down your problem.

Thanks
David

I took a look at the link you gave, and I'm not sure I got something
right. It says I should run firefox as "firefox -g 2>&1 | tee
gdb-firefox.log".

Can I do that all the time (that is, change the shortcut to that) so I
can get the log for an unexpected crash? I see such bugs relatively
often (once or twice a month) and I was never able to reproduce them.
(I expect it's mostly caused by my flaky network connection, perhaps
with some contribution from the extensions.) I would be willing to run
Firefox with some performance loss all the time, if it were useful to
debug at least some of these one-time crashes, but I'm not if it
accumulates ten megs of logs per hour or something like that.

You can do that as long as you can reproduce the crash. Im gonna close this bug. seems to have been a 1 time crash and im betting it was due to the spell checker since i assuming it hasnt happened since.
Please feel free to reopen it when you can reroduce it and can grab the backtrace by following the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingFirefox.

Thanks,
John
