Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde-core

Using KDE 3.5.4 on Ubuntu Dapper Drake, I am unable to send files to the trash (using the Trash Applet, sytem:/trash, or trash:/). When I try to trash a file, the progress dialog stalls at 0% and the source and destination fields are empty. I am not at this time sure of a reliable way to reproduce the bug, but I'll see if I can track down the cause.
Kubuntu Version: Dapper Drake 6.06LTS
KDE Version: 3.5.4
Kernel Version: 2.6.15-26-k7

can you run:

ls -la ~/.local/share/Trash/files

and either paste the result, or tell us what the permissions on those files and directories are?

ie, it should look something like:
-rw------- 1 sarah sarah 160 2006-09-03 20:55 away.log

Changed in meta-kde:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Are you sure it completely stalls? How long did you wait?

If this is related to bug #30842, the item gets sent to the trash after the dialog stalls for a bit, but then can't be deleted.

Sorry, I'm very impatient indeed. I always waited ~45 seconds with no progress, but it seems after about 2 minutes the dialog dissapears and it sends the file to the trash directory at which point it turns into bug 30842. Sorry to waste time.
Edit: And I accidentally posted this reply in 30842. I am really stupid. Terribly sorry about that.

David, this is a duplicate of bug 30842, so please follow up on that.

Well right now my trash is empty and I can't move anything to the Trash by deleting so I can only reproduce this bug, and not bug 30842.

I am experiencing this (suddenly -- it worked fine an hour ago) in 64-bit gutsy.

I just waited 6 minutes for a single file to be moved to the trash, before giving up and cancelling the operation.

There are 9.4GB of files in Trash (although I don't understand why that information might be useful; there are hundreds of GB of free space on the /home filesystem).

Two points:

1. I don't understand why this is marked as a dupe of 30842, since this bug has nothing to do with trying to empty the trash. Maybe both bugs have the same cause, but it's not at all obvious why this is necessarily true.

2. Closing and restarting KDE clears this bug. So I wonder what background KDE process is responsible for performing the "move to trash" function; this bug has the feel of a necessary background KDE process having died and not auto-restarted.

Indeed I see no relation between the "trash emptying" problems (which can have multiple causes, more on that in bug 30842), and a long delay when trashing a file. When the long delay happens, please check if ~/.xsession-errors has any output from kio_trash.
