Bug Description

This is a whitebox laptop.

I'm in Gnome (or from GDM for the matter). I try to suspend. _Apparently_ everything is ok during suspending, since the laptop actually suspends and the power led blinks. While trying to resume, I'm left looking at a blank screen (stays there forever). Caps-lock doesn't work, neither does ctrl+alt+delete. I've got an nvidia card, and I'm using 'nvidia'.

Please try with the "nv" driver.

Thanks this bug report and for attaching command output. Some of these commands need to be run with root access in order to get full information required for debugging, so it would it be possible for you to run the following and attach the output?

uname -a

sudo lspci -vv

sudo lspci -vvn

sudo dmidecode

It would also be helpful if you could try to hibernate/suspend and after that fails, restart your system and attach /var/log/kern.log.0 as well.

Thanks again, and sorry to ask you to do things twice!

Resume from suspend doesn't work with 2.6.20-5-generic #2 SMP on Feisty either. I turned off all internal devices from the BIOS to make sure it's not , say the NIC, that causes problems.

Oh. Another thing I noticed (with .17 and .20) : I suspend. I resume. The system resumes temporarily but then crashes. I can tell this because if I hit caps lock all the time the led goes on and off until the kernel crashes and there is no response and that (at least under edgy) if I was playing music before my attempt to hibernate, I get to hear a couple of seconds of music. It never gets to display anything though ('nv' driver).

Vassilis, it will also be useful to have the /var/log/kern.log.0 file from after a crash: Boot, suspend/resume to get the crash, reboot, then attach /var/log/kern.log.0 to this bug report. Thanks!

I would like you to try something. Log into X using the nvidia driver. Close any essential applications just in case. Then go into suspend - wait for approx 2 min then hit a key to resume. Even though you get a blank screen and hard drive activity, just give it some time. Once the hard disk light goes off wait for approx. 10 more min. Tell me if the display comes back on within that extra 10 min. I had a similar issue and could show you how to fix it.

actually, suspend/resume has worked the last few times, maybe my problem got fixed with the acpi-support update of yesterday? I haven't changed my config. But the oops is probably still usefull to look at, attaching.

There are several oopses. After the resume failed, I tried a few times with the sysrq keys, and that lead to more oopses it seems.

Vassilis, you'll note that I marked this as "fix released" for 2.6.20, based on other comments. If this doesn't match your experience, please do change the 2.6.20 status back to confirmed (yes, normally bad form to confirm one's own bug, but OK in this case, I think!).

If this is fixed in 2.6.20, then it is unlikely that there will be a fix applied to 2.6.17 unless one of the conditions on [1] are met. So, two questions: Was there any data loss as a result of this problem? and Did this work properly in Dapper or any previous release? Thanks!

Ok, I tried the acpi debug procedure. The driver that was the 'likely culprit' was serio0 in my case. I looked in the lsmod output and found a driver serio_raw, which I added to the MODULES in acpi-support. Even though the serio_raw driver was put in the MODULES list in /etc/default/acpi-support, yesterday I managed to make the machine reboot on resume. In the logs was again the serio_raw driver. After the reboot lsmod showed that the driver was loaded, but nothing was using it. (what is this driver used for anyway?). I completely blacklisted this driver now, in about a week's time I can comment more on this.

Sidenote: you often hear a lot of crap about the nvidia drivers and resume, but here is obviously a free driver in the mainline kernel that is giving me grief. It consistently causes (if the debug procedure is correct) my machine not to resume. Can anyone take a look at this driver, to try to fix it? I looked at the source in the kernel, and it's very small, but I don't know nearly enough about kernel programming and suspend/resume to be able to see what it is doing wrong...

The open source X nv driver doesn't actually have any code in the kernel. What you saw was a frame buffer driver for nvidia cards but this is almost never actually used. It would be interesting to know if you still have problems suspending and resuming with the vesa driver. If so I suspect your problems do not lie with X...

I don't understand. I'm not using nv, I use the nvidia driver, but that is beside the point. I'm having trouble resuming caused by the serio_raw driver.

Jos:
I guess I was wondering whether the nvidia binary driver might be interfering with serio_raw thus causing your issue. If the same problem happened with the nv Xorg driver then that explanation could be completely ruled out.

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
