Using Ubuntu 10.04 which worked yesterday & doesn't work today...no idea why. I don't think anything changed.

The problem seems related to using the pidgin-skype plugin. The short term work around seems to be uninstall pidgin-skype. For some reason (or possibly no reason at all) similar reports have been marked private...not sure who has something to hide around here, but if you uninstall pidgin-skype and use the two programs separately, it seems to solve the problem.

the same assertion failures happen in other applications, such as python (bug #563207), firefox/openjdk (bug #590497), f-spot (bug #564949)
