Bug Description

A Tango Gaim theme, which fits perfectly with the Human theme, is avaliable here:

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29142704/

Edgy should have this theme isntalled by default to create a more consistent desktop.

I love Edgy's further usage of Tango icons wherever appropriate, and Gaim should not be left out in the wonderful creation of a more attractive and usable desktop

Note how the notification area icon is replaced with an icon of chat bubbles, which clearly indicates to the user that it is a chat/IM/conversation program unlike the ambiguous Gaim icon .

Here's an alternative iconset:

Regarding the first, it's very important that you not replace the about box logo with something that says "GAIM". The program is always to be referred to as "Gaim" or "gaim", as outlined in the FAQ.

Gaim 2.0.0 has a number of icons from lokheed's previous icon theme.

Regarding the specific icons...

The Gaim developers are split on the clock vs. notepad icon for away.

I don't think it's a good idea to replace the generic Jabber icon with an icon clearly based on the Google Talk icon.

The Yahoo icon is even less recognizable than the current one we have in Gaim.

I don't like the replacement of the Gaim dude icons wholesale. The status ones incorporate the icon for a web browser, which is really confusing. The dialog ones are nice, but the Gaim Cool icon has been replaced with something that indicates a clear lack of understanding about what that icon is used for.

I really with the creator of these icons would've brought them to us for inclusion upstream, but he didn't. I found a previous version from a user's suggestion. As I mentioned, I included many of them upstream. However, the creator of those icons wasn't willing to work with us on changing some icons to meet the developers' requirements. To be fair, I rejected some of them right away without providing reasons (which I intended on getting to later) which set a bad tone.

I could detail more issues, which are not as critical, but it's really late here...

Regarding the second set... I like some of those better, but I'm not going to detail it.

All in all, if you feel there are specific icons in these themes that are better than those in Gaim 2.0.0 now, I'd be willing to look at including them upstream, which seems like a far better thing for everyone involved. I'd really rather not see Ubuntu with different icons (unless their entire desktop theme were to vary a lot from the respective upstream projects). It increases the support costs on both sides, and deprives Gaim users on other distros of nicer icons.

Hi richard, and thanks for your reply. I'm afraid I can't give a solution to many of the issues you're raising, but others shoulb be easily fixable.

"it's very important that you not replace the about box logo with something that says "GAIM".

Copying the current logo.png to the new iconset folder would do the job... I'm not sure if we would have to ask the creator for permission to modiffy the theme, though.

"I don't think it's a good idea to replace the generic Jabber icon with an icon clearly based on the Google Talk icon".

That caught my eye, too. There's an icon called jabber_bak wich could be renamed to jabber, much more generic.

"The Yahoo icon is even less recognizable than the current one we have in Gaim".

I have to disagree here, I did find it recognizable.

"The status ones incorporate the icon for a web browser, which is really confusing".

You're right. The status icons should be able to be replaced by dialog ones, they're actually visible when you browse your recent status, watch:

I don't know how to replace them, though.

"the Gaim Cool icon has been replaced with something that indicates a clear lack of understanding about what that icon is used for".

I'm not even sure what the Gaim Cool icon exactly is, so I might not be the right person to discuss that.

"Regarding the second set... I like some of those better, but I'm not going to detail it".

Both sets seem to go well with each other, would it be possible to take the ones you like from the second and the right ones from the first and create a hybrid set?

They don't go well with Gaim's current set tho, thay're much crispier and it wouldn't be a good mix IMO.

Sorry to bump this bug up, but could this be possible for feisty? Since Gaim is a package installed by default a nice look and feel should be important in my humble opinion.
Or are there any problems replacing the iconset?

The icon theme should probably be packaged and not forced to the gaim package

I have found yet another icon set that seems to solve most of Richard's concerns. Do you guys think that this bug could be revised?

With Pidgin 2.2.1 they have changed a lot of the interface and the icons are much nicer now and apply to the tango style guidelines. The application feels much more integrated now.
Is this bug still valid?
