Bug Description

On the "Power Management Preferences", when choosing "Shutdown" as the action for "When power button is pressed", the system shuts down as expected after pressing the power button.

However, the gnome session is not saved [1]

On the other hand, when Quitting the system through the menus (System>Quit...>Shutdown), the session is saved as expected.

[1] having "Automatically save changes to session" activated under gnome-session-preferences.

This always happends because it's difficult to tell GNOME that needs to
"logout". In the other hand, ACPI sends a DCOP message requesting to
logout the desktop... I don't know if GNOME has DBUS interface for
logging out, it is be necessary for this issue.

I would guess that setting the 'interactive' setting in the PM preferences would be a sufficient workaround; it would bring up GNOME's logout screen.

Andrew,

Thank you for your comment, but:

1) The point of using the "Shutdown" setting is precisely because of wanting to override the "Interactive" logout.

2) Choosing "Interactive" logout in g-p-m does still not work:

regression: pressing power button no longer brings up logout dialog
https://launchpad.net/bugs/57872

I would have guessed that when pressing the power button with the "Shutdown" setting in g-p-m some script would have been executed to save the gnome session before terminating all processes, but it is apparently not so, so I'll keep investigating -any further information will be very welcome.

So until this is fixed I will use the old (System>Quit...>Shutdown) method to shut down my computer.

This was fixed upstream a long time ago, and the fix should be in ubuntu now.
