Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When switching to battery power on my laptop, I get a popup requesting my root password to give gnome-power-manager super-user rights so that it can run /usr/sbin/gnome-power-backlight-helper which would decrease my screen's brightness to conserve power.
When I replug my power cord, I again get the popup asking me to authenticate, even if I just authenticated mere seconds ago.

The same occurs when I'm idle for a couple of seconds and "Dim display when idle" is checked. This happens on both AC and battery power. Every idle-event requires a new authentication, which gets to be rather annoying.

Temporary workaround: uncheck the "Reduce backlight brightness" and "Dim display when idle" options.

This only started happening with gnome-power-manager 2.31.90-0ubuntu3 released today. The previous version didn't have this happen. The bug fix for [Bug 614039] Re: gnome-power-manager crashed with signal 5 in _XError() seems to have caused this possibly. gnome-power-manager stopped crashing but now have to authenticate for changing backlight.
