This all looks so familar. The gdmgreeter not connecting, and in my case gdmsetup also emulates the greeter and won't /can't connect. Nobody seems to know what's wrong. I have aklso lost the halt/reboot icons/functions from the quit command on the menu (I am running EDGY)

Last night after the latest update which included GDM, everything went back to normal....until I rebooted. And we are back at square one.

The thing is that when you update your gdm package it restarts gdm, just like the solution that I posted on the forum... so It will work only one time, and this is expected behaivior of the bug.

Thanks for your bug. There is some upstream and launchpad bugs similar to that with debug hint:

Do you use NFS or NIS? Do you know how to rebuild a patched package? Do you get anything to /var/crash about gdm? Do you get any debug information about the gdm process to /var/log/syslog if you enable the gdm debug key?

thanks for all the info, I think i'm getting close to a solution... I remember now that after some kernel updates my network card doesn't come back from hibernation so i've put its drivers (via-rhine) on the modules file and it fixed it. maybe that is the problem, the network is not up when gdm starts.

I don't use neither NFS nor NIS and i'm using ubuntu edgy i386. no /var/crash about gdm. An I'm rebooting now to see what info I get from gdm with debug on.

I don 't use either NFS or NIS, and nothing in var/crash

In my log you will see the gdmgreeter failing after the bootup and then doing fine after I restarted it on the command line.

to enable it edit the /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and set the debug=false to debug=true frank.

write Debug=true to the [debug] section of /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom
