Bug Description

When installing the vmware player package the one of the modprobe calls that get run /etc/init.d/vmware-player failed, which caused the configuration of the package to fail.

Now whenever I install/upgrade any package(s) it tries to configure the vmware-player package again, and fails because some step in the configuration doesn't like letting run again (which means it will do it again on the next package install).

Output when attempting to configure package:

Now configuring VMware Player. (This may take some time...)
Configuring a bridged network for vmnet0.

Configuring a NAT network for vmnet8.

Probing for an unused private subnet (this can take some time)...

Yeah, this is very annoying when trying to fix vmware player especially as all the probing ties up the package manager for ages.

I can confirm this on Ubuntu 6.10. Whenever i install a new package, any package at all, vmware-player is being reconfigured and i have to type in lots of "yes"-es to the little terminal-widget in the install-window.
Is a fix on the way? Are there any way i can fix this myself?
vmware-player works fine by the way.

Sounds like you need to purge it and reinstall. Did you have any other VMware products installed before this?

Changed in vmware-player:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

I have had similar problems. If you have an Atheros based wireless card then it seems that that might be the root cause. Search launchpad for atheros & vmware to find others with the same issue

For a quick fix you might want to try this which has worked for me:
