Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

After installing package firefox_1.99+2.0b2+dsfg-1ubuntu2_i386.deb in 64bit edgy using "dpkg --force architecture" Firefox reports that it cannot find the library libplc4.so, and does not start.

You should be using the 64bit version of the pkg, which IS available:
firefox_1.99+2.0b2+dfsg-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb

The 32bit package is built for 32bit edgy, and expects libraries found on that particular arch. While work-arounds may work, I don't see this as a problem with the firefox deb pkg.

Is there a reason why you need 32bit firefox instead of the 64bit firefox? Maybe you could target the bug in a manner more specific to your problem.

It is rather common for use 64bit guys to install the 32bit versions of particular packages. Firefox is one. The reason is: a lot of plugins (flash especially) simply do not exist in 64 bits. Without these plugins a lot of the web ceases to exist...

Installing 32bit firefox went off without a hitch in dapper 64bit so I assumed there wouldn't be a problem in edgy.

While you are correct kick6, there are many work arounds to use 32 bit Fx in 64 bit Ubuntu. Please see http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=84732. Does this help you?
