Bug Description

I can play this same dvd (Akira) on my dapper system:

dpkg -l gxine|grep ^ii
ii gxine 0.5.7-1ubuntu4~dapper1 the xine video player, GTK+/Gnome user interface

but on my edgy laptop:

ii gxine 0.5.7-1ubuntu4 the xine video player, GTK+/Gnome user interface

it hangs. several other dvds play fine on both systems.

does gxine crash or hang for you?
are you sure you have the package 'libdvdread3' installed?

crashed twice, hung once.

secrettraveller:~$ dpkg -l libdvdread3|grep ^ii
ii libdvdread3 0.9.6-3ubuntu1 library for reading DVDs

Anything else useful I can do?

From your subject I see that it happens only with some dvds. Is this right? Can you say whats special about this dvd? is it perhaps unencrypted? other region code?

It's region 1. This is a rental from Blockbuster.

I stuck the DVD in question back in and it plays fine now. :/ It hasn't played at all before now.

Sorry.
