Bug Description

Binary package hint: syslog-ng

Everyone seems to treat the removal of Ubuntu metapackages a bit nonchalantly, but I can't in my present circumstances.

Ubuntu-minimal should depend on some virtual package, such as syslogd or system-log-daemon.

Sysklogd, which is an explicit dependency in ubuntu-minimal, provides "syslogd, system-log-daemon" and replaces "syslogd." syslog-ng provides "system-log-daemon, linux-kernel-log-daemon." It should also provide "syslogd" and replace "syslogd."

Ubuntu-minimal should probably depend on "sysklogd | system-log-daemon (or even syslogd)".

In my work environment, I need ubuntu-minimal itself and syslog-ng. There is no current way of having them cohabitate.

I also agree with this. sysklogd is an old piece of software, with no new releases since 2001, and can cause deadlocks if used together with a local nameserver (see here: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=bind-users&m=106550411521807&w=2), or delays in logging if it has to do reverse DNS lookups. syslog-ng allows for DNS lookups to be disabled, and has many other features. It should at least be provided as an alternative.

SuSE has provided support for using syslog-ng since at least 9.1 (through a generic 'syslog' initscript), and other distros (Debian included, as seen in the link below) are considering a replacement for sysklogd:
