Was going to try full install of 6.10rc to check functionality. But, could not install as option buttons are off screen at the lower resolution and can not be scrolled or resized onto the screen to make a selection or entry. So could not proceed with install.

Ubuntu 6.10 release
Resolution still not correct. Max resolution is still 800 x 600 when it should be 1024 x 768.

Thanks

It could be bug 79064.

From Xorg.0.log the X server can't find your monitor type with DDC.

As a workaround.
from a console try:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
and restart X
you should have something like
Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "COMPAQ MV700"
 Option "DPMS"
        HorizSync 30-70
        VertRefresh 50-100
EndSection

If it doesn't work then it's a xresprobe, dexconf bug and add
the missing lines
        HorizSync 30-70
        VertRefresh 50-100
