Bug Description

Binary package hint: inkscape

When installing Inkscape (via Synaptic), it does not get associated with *.svg files (its native format).

Can be fixed by manually running "sudo update-desktop-database", or by selecting "Open with other application..." from the context menu of an svg file.

Do you mean Inkscape does not appear among the "Open with" entries? What version of Ubuntu / Inkscape are you using?
I see an "Open With / Inkscape Vector Illustrator" entry in my Gutsy.

I think bug should be marked 'Invalid'. This is the correct behaviour for Inkscape.

Inkscape should not associate itself with all SVG files. SVG is just a picture format. Should all JPGs GIFs PNGs open in GIMP?

Images are opened in an image viewer, if you want to edit them you need to show the system that that's what you want.

Thanks for your comment! You are right, however there are "two levels of association".
* It should appear when you have the "Open with" dialog.
* However it should not be associated ("Windows way") with the "extension"

I tried to ask the reporter if neither happens. The second is a bug, IMHO. YMMV.

The bug was with Ubuntu 6.06 and Inkscape wasn't adding itself to the list of applications that can handle svg files. Anyway the bug is most likely fixed by now. I haven't tested on any of the newer versions.

Thanks Áron, you're quite right - I didn't know that. It works as you describe in the current release of Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).
