Bug Description

Binary package hint: smartdimmer

smartdimmer hangs with nvidia geforce go 7400.

on a new sony vaio vgn-sz2vp/x, with dapper, the acpi key events for fn-f5/fn-f6 (brightness down / up) cause the system to hang. turns out that /etc/acpi/sonybright.sh tries to use spicctrl and echo to proc/acpi/sony/brightness, neither of which have any effect. it then calls smartdimmer -d or -i.

smartdimmer hangs with any parameter that requires accessing the display card (i.e. even -g to get info).

perhaps this has something to do with bug #39820, which suggested that smartdimmer only worked with geforce 6200 and was disabled for any later version, because it may not work?
