Bug Description

Dell Mini 1012, running Maverick Meerkat 10.10 beta (64-bit), won't fully wake from sleep. Upgraded from Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS (64-bit) last night. Reproducible consistently.

1. Close lid, machine goes to sleep.
2. Open lid, hard drive spins up but screen never comes on.

I had no problem in Lucid Lynx (I upgraded in hopes of a fixed Wi-Fi connection display (which is) and just to try out what's new...)

Same here. Except that I believe you mean you're running the 32-bit version. The Atom CPU is 32-bit only.

No, I mean what I say. I was running the 64-bit version. The new Atom N450 processors are 64-bit processors.

same issue with my Dell XPS system 64 bit intel processor and ATI 1GB card. Any pointer on this?

No, I'm not smart enough to really figure it out but it sure seems like a Dell thing... are Dell's doing something different from their competition in the BIOS and power management?

This is not a Dell-only bug. I can confirm that I get identical behavior on my ZaReason-built Intel Core i7 machine (Linux buddha 2.6.35-22-generic #34-Ubuntu SMP Sun Oct 10 09:26:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux). Prior to upgrading, Sleep/Wake-up worked perfectly. After upgrading to 10.10, the computer sleeps just fine, but on wake-up, the computer itself seems to be up and running, but the monitor, mouse/keyboard are not functioning.

Yup that's the same bug. Can both of you collect system data to? It'd be good to try and at least see what common hardware all these machines with this problem have...

i am a total newbie with Linux could you please let me know the command to get the information you are looking for?
Are you talking about "lshw" command which gives me a complete profile of the hardware i have?
"sudo lshw -html > harwareprofile.html"

The same problem here on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400, except the error is reproduced seemingly randomly.

I tried using apport-collect but it only allows me to create a new bug report. It won't let me append to an existing bug (maybe that should be reported as a bug or a feature enhancement request). Is there another way of collecting sys-info automatically?

I'm running natty on my dell 1012. I used the advice in comment #4 on bug 642091 about how to switch to just one cpu during suspend, and it's working for me now :)

The workaround came from http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6105510&postcount=12

There are other approaches also described in that bug report if the cpu workaround doesn't work for you.

After upgrading to current 11.10 and upgrading BIOS to A12 I again enabled SpeedStep and there was no more problem for me.
Not sure if the fix was in ubuntu or in BIOS though.
Someone please try just the Ubuntu upgrade first, without upgrading the BIOS.

Latest BIOS can be downloaded from:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=inspiron1012&os=BIOSA&osl=EN
(sadly it requires windows for flashing).

markuhde, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Is this reproducible in the latest release of Ubuntu via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ ?

If so, please execute the following via a terminal in order for the necessary debugging information to be attached:
apport-collect 632538
