Bug Description

When I use the Desktop DVD for Ubuntu Edgy Eft Beta (i386 or amd64) [ubuntu-6.10-beta-dvd-arch.iso], the text-mode install fails at base system installation. Shortly after the zlib1g package, the install displays the following error message:

Failure trying to run: chroot /target mount -t proc proc /proc

And after pressing the 'back' button a couple times:

debootstrap: mount: mount point /proc does not exist
exited with return error code 1

And it knocks me back to the menu of installation options (partitioner, install base system, etc).

This does NOT happen with the alternate install CD [ubuntu-6.10-beta-alternate-arch.iso]'s text-mode installer.

Others are having the same problem. Thread (and set of install logs) here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=268971

Workaround:

1. Switch to one of the consoles, e.g., Alt+F2.

2. Create the mount point by hand: mkdir /target/proc

3. Restart the installation of the base system.

Well, you will get past the problem with proc this way, however more trouble awaits. "Warning: Failure trying to run: chroot dpkg ...". I will file this as an extra bug now.

sounds like that the installer is EXTREMELY broken. That's a sad news.
21st october is near...

can you confirm this is fixed in the latest builds?

The problem does not exist in the text mode installer of ubuntu-6.10-rc-alternate-i386.iso. I did not test a DVD, since I found no DVD image of RC1 on the servers. Hopefully, the installer is similar on the DVD image to come. I can also confirm that #65281 does not exist in RC1.

Tests were done on the very same hardware as before: a Dell D420.

I will unfortunately not have access to this notbook before monday. I will then test the latest xubuntu as well as the DVD images xtknight mentioned (which I could not find).

I think that is the latest DVD, but since this bug was assigned to xubuntu-meta I thought it was specific to the installer on the xubuntu alternate CDs.

I'm pleased to announce that I no longer have the problem on the latest
Ubuntu 6.10 Daily Build Desktop DVD. Previously with the first beta DVD I
was having the problems, and I no longer am, so the bug was fixed (at least
for me). Good work.

I don't know whether it is specific to debian-installer (alternative CD), but it is specific to xubuntu. ubuntu's debian-installer didn't have this problem.

It definitely used to happen on the Ubuntu Desktop DVD text-mode install
too.

If I wasn't clear, I meant it used to happen on Ubuntu (GNOME) and it is or
was happening on Xubuntu (XFCE). I have no idea about Kubuntu. I'm not
sure if the Xubuntu one is fixed. Originally I had the bug unassigned, then
it got assigned to debian-installer and xubuntu-meta by others but I don't
know what to assign it to for the regular GNOME Ubuntu.

I have tried the latest xubuntu-alternate-i386 daily build (20061017.1) and this problem doesn't occur anymore on the same hardware as I tried the beta alternate CD (which failed).
