Bug Description

hi,

I dist-upgraded from dapper to edgy 1 day ago.

All rocks.

Except gnome sound panel applet has no effect.

I have sound working (hda-intel). Totem/xine all work.

But this used to work in dapper now it doesn't.

When I run alsamixer I get this error:
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1105:(snd_func_refer) Unable to find definition 'defaults.ctl.card'
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib confmisc.c:242:(snd_func_getenv) error evaluating default
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_getenv returned error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib conf.c:3947:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib control.c:816:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

Also I can't get sound in flash any more (e.g.: youtube) but it used to work fine.

Thanks for the bug report. You mentioned that this was on beta1 of edgy. Does this still happen in current edgy for you?

I believe the problem was in my .asoundrc

I deleted my .asoundrc and then reconfigured alsa and it works

This is NOT because my .asoundrc was wrong in dapper.

It is just that the alsa hda-intel drivers are changing rapidly between versions of alsa.

So I think what happened is what alsa put in my .asoundrc in dapper is different to what alsa wanted to put into my .asoundrc in edgy.

So it is still kind of a edgy and/or alsa bug. It has an easy fix so you can probably close this bug report.

I did do a fresh install of edgy, but I kept my /home partition so lots of dot files remained from dapper. I guess this is a kind of ongoing problem in upgrades/fresh installs.

User config problem according to previous comment, closing. Feel free to reopen if you can generate a broken .asoundrc from an Ubuntu config tool
