Bug Description

... Consistent crash on start when connecting to IMAP server

Thunderbird crashes in Edgy when connecting to an IMAP server. Moving the .mozilla-thunderbird directory and reconfiguring TB to use the IMAP server does not help.

Ok, I thought it was because the new version of thunderbird was incompatible with something in my old /home/.mozilla-thunderbird directory from Dapper, but soon after it downloaded all my messages from the imap server, it crashed again, just as consistently as before.

I downloaded the one from the mozilla site, and it crashes just as consistently, even after starting over with a new .mozilla-thunderbird directory. So thunderbird is simply unusable in Edgy for me for now.

same for me. the weird thing is that there is no new version in edgy: 1.5.0.7-0ubuntu1

output when running thunderbird:

This has been fixed in Thunderbird alpha 1 which is not available in Edgy.

So thunderbird will simply continue to be unusable in edgy (for people it happens to crash for)? I guess I'll have to download alpha then. Thanks for the heads up.

Excellent, alpha does indeed work. It may be unstable but at least it works.

I don't know.. I still hope that someone has a look at this report before Edgy is released. It seems to my as if Thunderbird always crashes when you have an IMAP Server configured (in my case it is a SSL server)

I changed the description a little bit. If you are not okay with it, please change it back.

Aaron, could you please try to move your .mozilla-thunderbird directory to .mozilla-thunderbird-old and to reconfigure Thunderbird to use IMAP then?

If it crashes, though, you are running into excactly this bug report. If this helps, you are probably facing bug 58008.

When you are done with testing you can remove .mozilla-thunderbird and move .mozilla-thunderbird-old to .mozilla-thunderbird again.

It is very important that you backup your current .mozilla-thunderbird directory!!

In it your POP mails and settings are stored.

As I stated in the other report, I have no recurring crash, mine was a once-off. As such I am not sure how I would gauge any improvement or change whatsoever. As I understand it, the only similarity between the two bugs is that I also use an IMAP account.

I get the same thing, however I've noticed it crashes only when I connect to my home IMAP 4 server (courier-imap), if I connect to work exchange server its fine as well as another provider I have who's using dovecot, I believe.

Like the OP, the problem is reoccuring, after deleting my mozilla-thunderbird directory Thunderbird works fine until the point I re-setup my courier IMAP account and it crashes again.

Some other specifics:

Ubuntu Dapper & Edgy, Intel Core Duo (Doesn't crash running the same version of TB on my AMD Gentoo), both i386.

Oh, and the other thing, it was working perfectly for well over 6 months to a year on the same PC (<1.5.0.6)

I get this same crash and error when connecting to a pop mail server....

I have a similar same crashing problem after updating to Edgy. I only have one single pop account active at the moment, no IMAP.

The application crashes right after starting up.

Re-installed Thunderbird: same problem.

Removed .mozilla-thunderbird and the problem was gone.

Re-copied my old Mail folder back to .mozilla-thunderbird, and it crashed again.
I tried to copy folder-by folder to find out where the problem lies, but I can't find a pattern.

I am using Ubuntu 6.10 on a VAIO S5M laptop. Thunderbird has been running without problems until the update today.

When you move / remove .mozilla-thunderbird and reconfigure Thunderbird to use your pop account, does it crash again then? For me it does with IMAP.

Btw., there was no Thunderbird update for a long time now: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/mozilla-thunderbird/ so I guess the crash is caused by an email we have in our mailbox.
