usplash: No usable theme found for 640x480

Bug Description

Usplash fails to show up when booting Ubuntu 6.10 beta. After gdm is loaded, press Alt-F1 and there is a failure message on the virtual console:

usplash: No usable theme found for 640x480
screen init failed

It's a ThinkPad X32, and the graphics card is:

0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY

You can try the following via the command line:

sudo nano /etc/usplash.config

make it look like

# Usplash configuration file
xres=1024
yres=768

save and close, then type

sudo update-initramfs -u

reboot and see if that fixes it.
