The kernel does not boot

Bug Description

The kernel does not boot, finishes with
"cannot open root device",
"unable to mount root".
I guess that he misses some modules in initrd,
since I have succeeded to boot
when I buiilt the kernel from source.
Other problems jumped out then,
so perhaps I will not be able to use
my expensive hardware with legacy drivers...

The command

apt-get install kernel-headers-2.4.27-2-686-smp kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp

reports:
....
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.4.27-2-686-smp
W: kernel 2.4.27-2-686-smp too old for initramfs on i386
W: not generating requested initramfs for kernel 2.4.27-2-686-smp
....

is in the /boot/grub/menu.lst the Kernel option correct ?

.... root=UUID=f3f31dc8- ....

I have try to change to root=/dev/hda... (Right Device) without success.

That's probably because the edgy initrd binary cannot handle 2.4 style initrds anymore.

Changed in kernel-image-2.4.27-i386:
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

Did not even mention what version of the kernel doesn't boot. Please reopen if Hardy does not boot.
