Bug Description

Using Synaptic 0.57.8 in edgy, highlight a package in the main window, and then do "Package-->Lock Version" from the menu. The list is refreshed, but the status of the selected package is not changed: the package is not locked.

Also, the file /var/lib/synaptic/preferences is not touched.

This worked in dapper.

Thanks for your bugreporrt.

Does this happens for any package? Or only for specific ones (e.g. installed ones etc)?

Thanks,
 michael

As far as I can tell, this happens for any package.

Perhaps I should also clarify: when I wrote "the status of the selected package is not changed" in my original report above, what I mean is that the gui of Synaptic indicates that the status of the package is not changed (i.e. not locked or pinned). I haven't yet been able to observe whether Synaptic actually treats the package as pinned when a new version of the package becomes available.

Eh, today I fought quite a long time with synaptic to get it to unlock some packages : no way. Synaptic did as it does when it does something, but when I got hand again, nothing had changed.

I finally unlocked them by removing the /var/lib/synaptic/preferences file (which had been created when the box was still dapper).

I then changed my mind and decided to re-lock one of them. Same problem.

I would say the menu is connected to "make the user wait while we rebuild the package categories which we didn't change".

Hope it helps

I don't know if it can help you to narrow down the search for the version of synaptic that is affected by this bug, but synaptic works fine for lock and unlock in Debian testing, which has the package synaptic-0.57.11(but the Help-About box shows version 0.57.8, go figure...).

Same problem too, because of it, I can't unlock the version that I made previously from ubuntu 6.06(currently using 6.10) and I can't install higher version for my Mplayer. Thanks god for the suggestion that Snark posted help me to unlock version.

Anyone have a reasonable work around for this? It's critical for some users to lock packages (and still retain some update-manager functionality). I for instance use a specific version of Wine for Lotus Notes.

Well this was reported almost a month and a half ago, and it's importance is undecided, and nobody is assigned to it. I would think something like this would be of high importance.
