Bug Description

On a distribution upgrade from up-to-date 6.06LTS AMD64 to 6.10, update-manager did not select ubuntu-desktop for install (the metapackage was removed by something I removed earlier on the system)

As a result, the resulting upgraded system was missing several apps, including gnome-terminal, linux-headers-generic, and some of the new edgy apps.

I believe siretart was talking about a similar problem, in #ubuntu-devel or -motu yesterday.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Update-manager should reselect the package. Could you please attach the logs from /var/log/dist-upgrade/ to this bugreport?

Thanks,
 Michael

so many problems about ubuntu-desktop not installed. There are probably different root causes, but would it make sense to create a meta bug report and have all the individual reports block that bug? Can launchpad even do this (hierarchical bug dependencies)?
