Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox is unusable, due to crashes with errors to the terminal like:
"""
The program 'Gecko' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 118 error_code 8 request_code 144 minor_code 3)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
"""

Strangely, I don't get the usual crash-handler dialog when this happens, it just vanishes.

This happens with some pages, not with others -- for example I can get to google.com, but a big image or complicated page (like gmail inbox) causes a crash (not reliably, but most times).

This is on a Thinkpad with integrated intel graphics. Worked fine with dapper, with the same X configuration. X config follows. This is also starting from an empty ~/.mozilla directory.

are you using flashplugin-nonfree? It is known to make firefox2 unstable.

I am using flashplugin-nonfree, and moving the plugins directory away and restarting firefox gets rid of the crash.

Any suggested alternative to flashplugin-nonfree?

nope, sorry.. there are free alternatives but AFAIK they are not any better when it comes to stability.

You can try the flash9 beta which was recently released. You'll find the link here:

http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/

and you can try using a clean profile if it helps.

I'm seeing the same problem on my new edgy install. Haven't tried removing flashplayer-nonfree yet. I'm attaching a crash report in case it helps.

I can confirm: removing flashplugin-nonfree makes the problem go away AND the flash9 beta install works just fine. Any chance this will get packaged up sometime soon?

marking as rejected as the crash is due to 3rd party binary blob

chris: it will get in feisty (7.04 now under development), don't know if it could make it in 6.10. It's still in beta, though.

Changed in firefox:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected
