Bug Description

In latest Edgy I cannot install new printers.

I go through the steps in adding a printer (gnome-cups-add I assume), but when finished no new printer is installed?

In /var/log/cups/error_log is says:
"E [03/Oct/2006:15:13:40 +0200] CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized"

In /var/log/cups/access_log is:
"localhost - - [03/Oct/2006:15:12:59 +0200] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 1595 CUPS-Get-Devices -
localhost - - [03/Oct/2006:15:13:02 +0200] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 1176337 CUPS-Get-PPDs -
localhost - - [03/Oct/2006:15:13:40 +0200] "POST /admin/ HTTP/1.1" 401 349 CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer successful-ok
localhost - root [03/Oct/2006:15:13:40 +0200] "POST /admin/ HTTP/1.1" 200 349 CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer client-error-not-possible"

I am not having problems with my ppd:

"cupstestppd CLP-510.ppd" gives the following:

CLP-510.ppd: PASS
WARN DefaultLinuxGDIBand has no corresponding options!
        WARN Obsolete PPD version 4,0!
                REF: Page 42, section 5.2.

And the printer worked just fine in Dapper.

I cannot reproduce this problem. I have also an updated Edgy, CUPS 1.2.4 (corrected bug #63707 manually).I have successfully added print queues by starting the gnome-cups-manager from the desktop menus (System/Administration/Printing) or simply the add-printer wizard from the command line ("gnome-cups-add"). In both cases I had a correctly working print queue (HP LaserJet 4050N on the network, TCP/Socket).

Have you tried to add the queue from a privileged user account (user must be in "lpadmin" group, the first user set up at all is in this group, check /etc/group file)?

Did you update from Dapper or did you do a fresh Edgy installation? If you did an update, check whether the first user is really in the "lpadmin" group.

Or are you on a live CD?

I upgraded from Dapper using the Update-manager.

There is no difference whether I run as root or as user. User btw. is member of lpadmin-group.

Same entries in logs:

I tried to "completely remove" all of the cupsys-packages, and later re-install them.

Unfortunately without any achievements.

Since I use my laptop for work as well, and since it's harddrive has very limited space, I have been forced to downgrade to Dapper. I hope that this bug was somehow related to misconfigurations on my machine, I haven't seen many bug-reports concerning these issues anyway.

But thanks for the help.

Setting up my HP DeskJet 3820 printer is perfectly possible so claiming that Edgy won't install printers is incorrect.

According to http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Samsung-CLP-510 your Samsung CLP 510 is not very well supported on Linux.
This is a cheap printer that uses the proprietary SPL-C language. This means only a closed source driver for your printer is provided by Samsung.

It is very difficult to support closed source drivers, according to the link above on dapper you have to do some steps to get it working.
The thing you can do is make sure you are using the latest Samsung driver for your printer. You could check the Samsung forums on linuxprinting.org to see if you can find a solution there from users who have the same or similar printer models.

You could also try if adding your printer through the cups web interface (http://localhost:631/) instead of gnome-cups-add works. The cups web interface is enabled by default in Edgy.

Pascal, thank you for comment - but the same thing happened for other printers as well - no matter their price(!)

As I mentioned I think some config went bad during the upgrade, cause I had no problems using the printer in Dapper.

I have now reverted to Dapper since Edgy were too problematic (no printers, no WIFI, no dual screen) - and cannot test web interface - but I'll keep it mind when I update again later this month.

The Samsung CLP-510 is now supported by the free SpliX driver. Please test it.

I have packaged SpliX now. Please try this package:

If you have installed the SliX binary package linked in the previous post for testing, please uninstall it and install this one:

http://www.freestandards.org/~till/tmp/ubuntu/feisty/splix/binary/splix_1.0.1~beta2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

I have corrected the version number notation (splix_1.0.1+beta2 -> splix_1.0.1~beta2) to make an update to the final 1.0.1 release of SpliX installing smoothly.

The source files are also replaced as I have done some packaging policy fixes.
