Bug Description

i upgrade to edgy /beta/ and when i type my user and password in login screen i see gnome splash but then i see again login screen asking me for user and password. it seems like xserver restart by itself. i try to log into gnome failsafe but it faill to login too. I can login only with failsafe terminal but when i type command in terminal like "locate gnome" /command output is displayed more than one page in x term/ xserver restart and i see again login screen promping me for my username. I don't know where is problem in xserver or in gnome?

I temporarily marked as gnome. could you attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log? It should have info if the crash is due to xorg. It may as well be that something is wrong with your user profiles (try logging in with a new user account).

I cannot be sure... It may as well be a problem with firewalls, gdm, xorg... I see this:

"AUDIT: Wed Oct 4 00:51:08 2006: 6134 X: client 2 rejected from local host"

at the end of the file.

but is the "client 2" your login or something else? I don't know. Basically, afaik, it says a 2nd client tried to connect (login to X) but was rejected due to security reasons. I would go to ubuntuforums.org and ask there as well, while waiting for a devel to come here.

I also found this, which might be a clue (do you have a firewall)? http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree/2006-06/msg00088.html

now i'm login into failsafe terminal and try to start application. Application start but without window borders including title bar, status bar, scroll bar. I think that is the problem ubuntu fails to create title bar and xserver crash. Can i change window theme from command line and change window decoration?

Thanks for your bug. Could you try to start gnome-session for the xterm debug session? Does it start? If not what messages do you get?

in .xsession-errors file, I see "Owner of /tmp/orbit-ivan2 is not the current user ". who is it then? can you please do:

whoami > permissions101.txt
ls -l /tmp/orbit-ivan2 >> permissions101.txt
ls -l /home >> permissions101.txt
ls -al /home/yourusername/ >> permissions101.txt
ls -alR .gconf >> permissions101.txt

(> becomes >> after the first command, also pls change yourusername to your user name :) )

then attach the resulting permissions.txt here? It will be inside whichever directory you issued these commands. I want to check permissions as I see too many
"Failed to load source "xml:readwrite:/home/ivan2/.gconf": Failed: Could not make directory `/home/ivan2/.gconf': No such file or directory" type messages...

And finally, do you have any firewalls installed (like "firestarter" etc)?

hi, first time when i failed to login i created new user ivan2 but again i can not login. I do not have a firewall installed. i think that this user is owner of this files.

i can't found solution for this problem. problem is not in my username. i think problem is in gtk or gnome because i wrote that windows have not scrollbar for example and when i start xterm and scrollbar is needing xserver restarts some kill it.
thanks
