Assigning this to GDM so someone from that department can look at it, it might get reassigned, but at least it will be looked at.

It happens on the main Gutsy distribution as well and not jut Edubuntu. nVidia has stated that multiple X servers per GPU is NOT supported.

I also had this problem (almost, since the gdm crash wasn't related to user switch, it just happened at every login attempt).
The only thing that really worked for me was reinstalling gdm:

sudo apt-get purge gdm
sudo rm -rf /etc/gdm/
sudo apt-get install gdm

In addition to this, I've installed fglrx drivers through Envy.
Now everything runs smooth, compiz enabled etc.

The machine is a Acer Travelmate 8100, ATI Mobility Radeon X700

Forgot to mention: this happened after a Feisty upgrade to Gutsy.

Those who still see this with 7.10 could attach the same logs as the original reporter did. I'm not sure if this is a xorg issue at all.

Changed in xorg:
status: New → Incomplete

Same problem. Seems to occur more when firefox is open in first session.
I'm latest ubuntu 7.10 update.
I have intel Quad - 32 bit kernel

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

I don't see anything in the logs with errors. If you have an idea where I might find it, I'm happy to copy put it in here.. I didn't see errors inteh Xorg log.

I did find this in the log... I'm going to try to change the login theme and see if that helps.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 alpha? It isn't related to xorg.
