Bug Description

Hi,
  my ICH3 internal sound card:

Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

it's correctly detected and the driver seems to work, unfortunally the volume is terrible low, so low that i can hear something only with headphones, also at the max volumes.

 0 [I82801CAICH3 ]: ICH - Intel 82801CA-ICH3
                      Intel 82801CA-ICH3 with STAC9700,83,84 at 0xe000, irq 4
I think that this problem is introduced from dapper

bye,
   DarkBrain

Dino, can you please test with an Edgy beta live cd, and see if you still have this issue?

I suggest you go through all mixer settings. In Volume Control, go to Preferences to make all tracks visible, then turn everything up. You can also try "alsamixer" from the command line.

I hope you at least can get a cd and try Ubuntu 6.10 when it's released.

Hi there,

I had the same issue with Ubuntu 6.06 and waited Edgy to confirm.. Unfortunately same issue..

Issue on a Toshiba Satellite L100.
A friend has a similar laptop in the L100 range and doesn't have the issue.

alsamixer is reporting a generic chipset on my machine, but a realtek chipset on his.

Same problem under Fedora Core 5

Dino, is this when using the live CD/clean install or on a ungraded system? If the sound changes after logging in, it could be faulty user settings, or problems with esd, the sound daemon used by gnome.

It's a clean install. Esd is off and i haven't a .asoundrc file, i don't think
it's a kernel problem.

Try for instance logging in to a Failsafe X session, and run "aplay /usr/share/sounds/question.wav" from there.

I am less sure Dino and Sebastion have the same bug, since Dino's sound is ok until login.

Sebastian's bug -- orthogonal to the one in this bug report since his hardware uses both a different dsp and a different codec -- at least from the driver side is fixed in alsa-driver 1.0.13. The patches were sent to kernel-team@ in early October.

I suspect Dino's issue, which may also affect Sebastian, lies in post-session-restore for whatever desktop environment is being used.

What desktop environment(s) is(are) being used? There was formerly an issue with 6.06 where Xfce's mixer did interesting things.

I have experienced this issue with any ICH chipset. The main speaker volume is barely audible from 2m away under any linux distro but it sounds like a disco under windows. All outputs are set to 100% on amix and the problem is desktop-independent. I believe it all started with the 2.6 kernels and ALSA so I suspect it is a driver problem. I am now using jaunty, by the way, but I have been exeriencing this problem for a long time.

Luis,
This bug was filed aegainst an old, no longer supported kernel. The sound subsystem has undergone significant change since that time. Please follow the directions below and file a new bug and include your specific hardware and release information if you continue to have a sound problem.

Can you also confirm this issue exists with the most recent Karmic Koala 9.10 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . If the issue remains with Karmic it would be great to then also test the latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Thanks in advance.
