Bug Description

Hi,

I installed edgy last night, and I modified the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.

My kernel section looks like this:

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic
root (hd0,7)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/hda8 ro splash vga=791
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic
quiet
savedefault
boot

1. The usplash works fine however the messages on the screen too dark. I can't read the messages easily. In Dapper the messages was brighter.

2. I use vga=791 option which in Dapper caused 1024x768 usplash screen with lesser size fonts and lesser size kubuntu logo than the default. In Edgy this option has no effect. Has no effect means the fonts have a same size like without the "vga=791" option and the the "kubuntu" logo has a same size too. By the way the virtual terminals has 1027x768 resolution, so I'm sure the kernel not ignore the "vga=791" parameter.

I don't think so these are serious bugs. Or maybe these are features?

Best Regards,
totya

Edgy uses upstart which causes no messages to be displayed during the usplash stuff.
It is normal that you can't read anything while it runs.

Maybe you just misunderstood me. I know Edgy use upstart, and I can see messages in the usplash screen if I use the following boot enrties in the menu.lst file:

itle Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic
root (hd0,7)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/hda8 ro splash vga=791
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic
quiet
savedefault
boot

Just test it yourself, you will recognize there are messages on the usplash screen.

My problem is not "I can see boot messages". My problem is the messages are to dark.

Remove 'quiet' from the kernel command line to display them

You don't understand the problem. You did not analyze my menu.lst file entries carefuly. I'm going to post it here again:

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic
root (hd0,7)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/hda8 ro splash vga=791
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic
quiet
savedefault
boot

Do you see quiet flag in the kernel line? No. Because there is no 'quiet' flag in there. I've deleted the 'quiet' flag already. And again, there are boot messages in the screen. Trust me! ;-) However this boot messages use too dark fonts. My question: How can I make this fonts brighter? Please, please read carefuly my bug report! Did you really test this case?

Ok, I'm going to answer my qestion, because nobody did here.

So I downloaded the source:

apt-get source kubuntu-artwork-usplash
cd kubuntu-default-settings-6.10/

It takes 1 minute to realize the color settings are here:

usplash/usplash-theme-kubuntu.c

I just modified the ".text_foreground" lines, and I now use the same setting just like the ".text_success" has.

So my entries:
/* Palette indexes */
        .background = 0x0,
        .progressbar_background = 0x7,
        .progressbar_foreground = 0x156,
        .text_background = 0x0,
        .text_foreground = 0x33, <--- I modified this line, the original was 0x15
        .text_success = 0x33,
        .text_failure = 0x144,

After I rebuilt the package:

fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage

And voila the messages are much brighter (still blue) now.

Next time I won't wait for support if I can solve my problem. I hope my report will be useful somebody else has the same problem with usplash in kubuntu (edgy).
