Bug Description
I have been running Ubuntu edgy for some time without problems. This morning, I ran update-manager and updated all packages. After doing so, and restarting the system as requested, I have been unable to log in.
The symptoms are as follows:
Ubuntu appears to start correctly. I am presented with the login screen. My username and password are accepted (as expected invalid username / password combinations do not work). The screen flashes, as if it is attempting to start Gnome, then displays garbage (random image), then returns to the login prompt.
I am not able to use any of the other session options (e.g. failsafe terminal). They all return to the login prompt in the same way - typically showing different random data on screen.
So far, I have not been able to track down any log file(s) which may indicate why this is happening. If anyone can give suggestions for where to look I will happily look there!
The system in question is a somewhat aged Dell Dimension XPS T600.
D'oh! Never mind.
Apparently the updates which came through today pushed me dangerously close to filling up the disk drive. It may be appropriate to add some kind of warning when the drive space gets below N% and an update is requested.
The issue is basically user error, and aside from the potential enhancement of warning that it will happen or handling it better, the issue can be closed. Sorry for the inconvenience.
