System-tools-backends uses 9 mb of memory because it loads perl. It is not clear why this script justifies the memory usage.

Thanks for your bug. We don't have easy solution for that at the moment, we will try to work with upstream to make that better though

This upload fixes the problem:

 system-tools-backends (2.1.0-0ubuntu1) feisty; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream version:
     - added a lightweight C/Glib/DBus messages dispatcher,
       improves memory usage *a lot* during inactivity, and allows the
       development of modules in other languages than perl
   * Changes from 2.0.0:
     - handle zoneinfo as links
     - do not double escape quotes when running certain commands
     - Improve PPP info parsing in IfacesConfig
     - Fix infinite loop if the chatscript contains tabs
     - Improve NFS shares parsing
     - Use localstatedir to save the pidfile
     - Added Yellow Dog Linux, behaves like FC
     - Improve distribution detection
     - include test-backends in tarballs
   * debian/control.in:
     - Build-Depends on libglib2.0-dev (>= 2.4), libdbus-1-dev (>= 0.35),
       libdbus-glib-1-dev (>= 0.35)
   * debian/system-tools-backends.init.dbus:
     - updated the daemon file to use
   * debian/system-tools-backends.install:
     - install the new system-tools-backends binary
   * debian/patches/90_from_cvs_fix_dbus_connect.patch:
     - patch from CVS, fix dbus connection
   * debian/watch:
     - updated

I'm reopening this bug since I suffer from this bug with version 2.6.0-0ubuntu7 on a Xubuntu Hardy 8.04.
I also found even more memory issues, as I have described in bug #238183, but those don't have to be related to this bug.

please open a new bug rather, this bug was closed two years ago, the code probably has changed and the bug you're suffering could not be related to this one. thanks.
