Bug Description

Hardware:
- The computer is a Dell Optiplex GX620
- VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 5B62 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)]
- Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon X600(RV380)
- The attached monitor is a 17" Digital 1280x1024.

It boots from CD untill it tries to load gdm. It fails and brings the console. These are the logs from X.org. I tried both normal and safe video mode.

I paste the last part of the log, If you need more information let me know.

(II) ATI: Candidate "Device" section "ATI Technologies, Inc. RV370 5B62 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)]".
(WW) ATI: PCI Mach64 in slot 1:0:0 could not be detected!
(WW) ATI: PCI Mach64 in slot 1:0:1 could not be detected!
(EE) No devices detected.

Then I tried to boot selecting one of the VGA modes pressing F4 in the install menu. It was worse, after the initial ubuntu logo loading, nothing could be seen on screen.

Distribution: edgy knot-3

Can you please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixVideoResolutionHowto that provides instructions that will (hopefully) get your card running. Then please attach all the information listed in step 5 of
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingXAutoconfiguration. Thanks in advance.

Finally I made it work changing the Device driver from "ati" to "vesa".
I attach a file with : lspci -n, discover, xresprobe, Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf

Today I downloaded and burned ubuntu 6.10-beta. The installer was unable to to start xorg like it did with 6.10-knot-3.

Gavin Hamill (gdh) wrote : Installer chooses wrong xorg driver!

The problem here is the Installer is simply choosing the *wrong* X driver!

It is selecting 'ati' when it should be selecting 'radeon'

Simply changing the driver in xorg.conf and executing 'startx' on the Live CD (I am using the Release Candidate of edgy!) causes perfect operation.

Heck, even the Xorg.log.0 output spews out a ton of compatible cards for 'radeon' in which my card is listed (RV370 5B60),

Why is the auto-detect choosing "ati" ?

This is a critical issue! My PC is a very very generic Dell Dimension 5150 - there are 'one or two' of these systems in the world! :D
