This did not happen in Lucid, but after running the upgrade to Maverick, I'm also encountering this issue.

Gateway NV79 with the same problem. Even the Gparted boot disk results in the same blank screen. Not going to include a bunch of logs as this is clearly a problem with the xserver-org and HM55 video, culled from other posts on this exact same subject across the net. Have tried the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the 10.10 release, on CD and on USB stick.

It's a dirty hack, but if you plug in an external monitor during startup/installation then the backlight will work on the laptop display.

Running Maverick 10.10

I have the same hardware configuration, but normally use a second monitor and so was unaware of this until a few hours ago. I did try the different kernel versions at boot up and found that the problem is not present when I choose 2.6.32-25-generic at the grub boot screen.
Trying to boot 2.6.35-22-generic or 2.6.35-23-generic both result in an apparently blank screen until I close the lid and reopen.

This problem still effects me in 11.04.

I have some time to test. Last known working in 10.04.

A clean install of 11.04 solved the backlight on boot issue - but to gain full control of power management and to enable function key control of brightness, see post http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10180358&postcount=8
