Bug Description

When I upgrade my system with apt-get, all works fine except when there is a linux image update.

In this situation, the upgrade hangs my system during the unpacking of the new linux image.

I must restart my computer in safe-mode, then execute dpkg --configure -a. After this I can upgrade the linux image with apt-get.

I'm using Edgy.

I wonder if the problem here is not enough memory or something like this. What machine do you have? How much memory (RAM) and diskspace?

What does "hang" mean? That the UI (gnome/kde/X) freezes complettely?

I have a P4 at 2.4 GHz with 1GB of RAM and 150 GB of free disk space.

Gnome freezes and if I switch to a terminal, it freezes when prompting for the password.

Thanks for this additional information.

Is anything in /var/log/syslog after the crash? Messages from the kernel maybe?

No, only the "standard" logging information.

The computer doesn't crash, but it freezes completely. Even if I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it doesn't restart, I must power off the computer.
