Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I have a Radeon 9200 PRO (0300: 1002:5960 (rev 01) according to lspci -n), and attempting to use the free "radeon" driver in X works fine, unless I try to use glxgears or any other 3D rendering application. In that case, X will cease responding to input, though SSHing into the machine will continue to work, and I will be forced to restart X.

Under Dapper and Edgy, using this driver, direct rendering reports No, but under Dapper, the 3D apps merely run incredibly slowly, rather than requiring a restart of X if one spawns.

My Xorg.0.log shows nothing interesting on this occuring:
# tail -n 10 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Error opening /dev/wacom : Success
(**) Option "Device" "/dev/wacom"
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/wacom
        No such file or directory.
Error opening /dev/wacom : Success
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/wacom
        No such file or directory.
Error opening /dev/wacom : Success
(II) Configured Mouse: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
(**) RADEON(0): RADEONSaveScreen(2)

Additionally, restarting X via /etc/init.d/gdm restart fails in this case - X will not return, nor am I able to switch to console, until I restart the system.

Have you tried if the experience is as bad with Ubuntu 6.10? Or maybe even Ubuntu 7.04 development release, http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/feisty/herd-4

There have been many related fixes (AGP speed, new X.org, workaround for r200 line acceleration issue) in the Ubuntu development version lately, so marking as fix released as no new info has been posted. Reopen if necessary, but please first test with eg. the newest daily live CD images: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20070309/ (or newer)

Looks like I'm going to take over this bug, since I have run into it myself with this card and package version:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R200 QM [Radeon 9100]
01:00.0 0300: 1002:514d
ii xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.6.3-2ubuntu6

This machine has been running feisty for 3 weeks and has had this problem three times so far. X and console are unresponsive, but I can ssh from the ethernet connection.

The second time, I tried stracing the X server, but the entire machine became unresponsive. This time I am trying oprofile. I don't understand why the kernel would be stuck in tsc though. I didn't see any -dbg packages for any of the xserver-xorg packages so the radeon module doesn't have any symbols to lookup. Are there any debug packages in a separate repo somewhere?

Can you still make it crash with 7.10 or Hardy?
