Bug Description

I am trying to install Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop for i386, built on 20061017, on a Dell Optiplex GX6200. This machine worked with 6.10 Knot 2 and passed all tests. Also, the CD was checked for defects and none were found.

When installing with the default options and choosing to overwrite the disk (no resizing), the system crashes about half way through the process. At that point, the system no longer responds to the mouse nor the keyboard. So, I reinstalled and switched to tty1 at the beginning of the installation in order to catch messages sent to the console. These were the last couple lines displayed:

[17179915.336000] <c0151f30> wb_kupdate+0x0/0xe0 <c0135f8b> kthread+0xab/0xe0

Hey Marc,

I'm afraid we'll need more lines of the error message to isolate the problem. Can you take a photograph of tty1 and attach it to this bug report using its web page?

Thanks!

Is Knot 2 the most recent install which succeeded? Is this error reproducible every time? Is it at the same point during the install? Does the memory test on the CD show any errors?

Please attach a full dmesg

Simon, I don't have a digital camera to take a photograph of the tty1. Matt, when the installation crashes, the system no longer responds to the mouse nor keyboard. I would love to provide you with a full dmesg but I wouldn't know how under those circumstances.

As for the most recent successful installation, I meant to say the version was Knot 3 rather than Knot 2. Sorry for the confusion.

I am trying to reproduce the problem but the installation is failing on something else now. On the one hand, this is looking like a hardware failure. On the other hand, I am also getting installation failures on other systems. So, I will be checking the memory with memtester and checking the CD for defects again before re-running the installation.

A dmesg from before the crash is what I meant.
