Bug Description

Binary package hint: gimp

Since Ubuntu 9.10 the gconf-setting (gconf-editor) /desktop/interface/menus_have_icons is switched off (FALSE). This might be a good decision for menus in Gnome in general, but in GIMP dialogues like "Gradient Editor Popup-Menu" are not usable at all - unless you are good in reading numerical RGB values. As one can see in this screenshot of the menu, the colours (=icons) are essential: http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-gradient-dialog.html#gimp-gradient-editor-left-load

I set menus_have_icons to TRUE for the moment:
conftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons --type bool true

Any ideas how to fix this in general?

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.
