Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I wanted to try to update to Edgy RC1. My Dapper install is pretty standard even though I have some packages developpment headers. It was previously updated from Breezy without any problem.

I tried to update graphically using update-manager (didn't try with apt-get CLI yet) using gksu "update-manager -c -d". I get an error message just before the downloading of updates part. I don't have the specific english error message since my install is in French, but it roughly translates to "Unable to process update: An unsolvable problem appeared during the update process ; please file a bug report". So that's what I'm doing.

I have been repeating the process 3 times with the same result.

I certainly hope the bug (IMO, dependancy bug) will be fixed before the official release of Edgy, for people wanting to update from Dapper.

I'll try to attach the log files found in /var/log/dist-upgrade/

Happy fixing!

Simon

And here's the main.log log file. The term.log file is empty so I won't attach it.

Good luck.

Do you have the unofficial mesa/compiz packages installed?

Not as far as I know ; I installed the whole thing a few monthes ago but removed it all.

magnet@silmaril:~$ dpkg -l | grep -i compiz
magnet@silmaril:~$ dpkg -l | grep -i mesa
ii libgl1-mesa 6.5.1+cvs20060824 A free implementation of the OpenGL API -- G
ii libgl1-mesa-dri 6.5.1+cvs20060824 A free implementation of the OpenGL API -- D
ii libglu1-mesa 6.5.1+cvs20060824 The OpenGL utility library (GLU)
ii mesa-utils 6.5.1+cvs20060824 Miscellaneous Mesa GL utilities
ii xscreensaver-gl 4.23-4ubuntu8 GL(Mesa) screen hacks for xscreensaver
magnet@silmaril:~$

I don't see anything unofficial here, tell me if I'm wrong; anyway, should it halt the upgrade process? (I'm sure I could do it using apt-get just fine, I just think that the GUI util should handle things by itself).

I have the same problem and I had installed beryl/AIGLX (but I reverted my /etc/X11/xorg.conf to original setting since I thought beryl was a little unstable to my taste).

Is there anyone here who'd like me to check something else on my system before I do the dist-upgrade the old way? I didn't file the bug to get a solution to my problem but to help Ubuntu, and make the upgrade process work for existing Dapper users. I'd be happy to help more but I'm quite busy and I'd like to upgrade asap.

I can wait a few days if needed, but only if the attached log files aren't enough to understand the problem or if the bug isn't already reported/known (cf https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/63680 the update-manager GUI should be able to handle the upgrade by itself). Unless I'm told otherwise, I'll start upgrading in 20 minutes.

Thanks for your bugreport.

The first logs indicate that it was a problem with a unofficial libgl1-mesa-dri package (the versions are not in the official edgy archive). I marked it as a duplicate therefore.

Please note that in the second log ubuntu-desktop will get removed (due to the libgl1-mesa-dri package). This is not a big issue, I just wanted to point it out.
