Thanks for your bugreport and the logs.

How did the ugprade abort? Did it present you a error message? Or just hanged? The logs unfortunately don't indicate what exactly went wrong.

But please try:
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
$ sudo apt-get install -f
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop^

That should recover your system.

Thanks,
 Michael

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  courier-authdaemon: Depends: courier-authlib (>= 0.58) but it is not going to be installed
  courier-authlib-userdb: Depends: courier-authlib but it is not going to be installed

  courier-base: Depends: courier-authlib but it is not going to be installed
  totem-gstreamer: Conflicts: totem-xine but 2.16.2-0ubuntu1 is to be installed

E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

after seveal times playing around with all the options i ran
sudo dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq -P courier-authdaemon

this removed the pkg but it kept the directory
i rebooted and once in X update manager recomended a dist-upgrade saying it had not been completed, i did and rebooted and now it seems i am fully running edgy....

i recomend closing this since we are not sure what went wrong in the original update

you guys are the expert and can decide, if you want more info from be dont hesitate to ask

Thanks for this additional information and sorry that the upgrade was a unpleasant for you. The root of the problem seems to be a error in the courier-$foo packages. I'm investigating this currently.
