Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-i810

So I'm booted into Kubuntu Edgy rc1 (LiveCD), and I'm on a laptop with an i915 graphics card (if you could call it that ;p). Its optimal resolution is 1280x800, yet I only get a 1024x768 viewable screen, and I have this working in my Dapper install using the 915resolution application, although when I originally got that working, it was quite a hassle (but it did help me learn how to use a Linux-based system quite quickly).

I think this bug should be fixed by Xorg 7.2, but that's just what I've heard. If Edgy is going to be released with Xorg 7.1 (which I'm assuming considering 7.2 isn't released yet and Edgy is frozen), I think it would be helpful to include some sort of helper program to help users set up the 915resolution hack to get their correct resolution setting working. I know this is quite late in the process to request this, but even if we can't ship Edgy with some sort of helper program, it would be nice to include some info in the documentation on how to do it. For Kubuntu, we could include a Kommander script that does it for the user. For Ubuntu and Xubuntu, I'm not too sure, but a Python-GTK+ program that does it shouldn't be too hard to include either.
