Binary package hint: usplash
If I have usplash enabled on my ASUS W2 laptop when booting the keyboard input doesn't
seem to work correctly in X (kdm) once it starts up. trying to enter a username or password results in nothing being entered until I hit enter when I get a constant stream of characters showing up in the field. If however I switch to a virtual console and back again or simply remove usplash from the boot options it all works fine.
