Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Open the attached file and mark the pictures (Ctrl-a or with the mouse while the left mousebutton is pressed). The app crashes with a segfault, the shell tells me

/usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice: line 254: 7894 Segmentation fault "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"

For me too OpenOffice crashes when selecting pictures. I can confirm the crash for the file attached by carsten.
In carsten's blog (http://cniehaus.livejournal.com/28878.html) someone suggested to disable klipper, this does the trick, but is a rather bad workaround for me, because I use klipper very often. Some other guy suggested that using OO.org 2.0.4.1 would also solve the problem.

I also had this commend in my bug:

So I am very much for updating to OOo 2.0.4.1 (even though I cannot find the announcement for 2.0.4.1, but google gives quite some hits). This bug is so severe for me that I am considering switching distribution.

Other than a "me too" confirmation, not much to offer.

Disabling Klipper is helpful so far, but it would be nice if the fixed version was officially released to Edgy. It is still possible to crash Ooo if you do an X copy (middle click) - I think Klipper just does this immediately therefore making the problem more apparent.

Hello

So far, OOo crashed about 50 times for me, about 5 times with real dataloss. And this is without Klipper. With Klipper OOo crashed every 10 minutes... So I switched the PC (also Edgy) which was stable so far (without Klipper) for my work in OOo. That machine is now also crashing for some reason.

Is there any progress on this report? The bug is one month old and a major showstopper for many people. I know you have probably 100 others bugs in your queue, I am just asking for a small "we are activly working on it" or something. I am seriously considering switching away from Ubuntu because of this :(

Please recheck using these packages (add these lines to /et/apt/sources.list):

   deb http://people.ubuntu.com/~doko/ubuntu/ edgy/$(ARCH)/
   deb http://people.ubuntu.com/~doko/ubuntu/ edgy/all/

Please submit bug reports to malone, referencing the exact version and
platform you did use for testing.

Did an update today and just managed to crash it by selecting all (ctrl-a) in a pure text document (A4, only one page). I cannot reproduce. No backtrace as I never get a backtrace from OOo...

x86 computer (HP OmniBook xt1000)
KUbuntu with all updates as of today

I can open the original file without trouble in OOo 2.2 (openoffice.org 2.2.0rc3oof680m10-0ubuntu3). I've attached a pdf of what I see so Carsten can confirm that it looks right. Based on this I'm marking this bug as fixed.

Actually I can't mark this as 'Fix released' because the version I mentioned is only available in Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn). Matthias - is this still slated as an edgy-updates milestone?

After this and one other reported OOo-crash+dataloss bug I switched to OpenSUSE 10.2. I just compared the ODT and the PDF by Duncan and they look the same yes (and of course the ODT doesn't crash my OpenOffice).

But (by chance) I just hit another bug in OOo which can be confirmed on KUbuntu Feisty Fawn with OOo 2.2-rc3. I reported this against OpenOffice itself, this is the bug-number:

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=75517

Is this related? Somebody just told me that it doesn't crash OOo 2.0.4 in Edgy...

By switching to OpenSUSE you have switched to OpenOffice_org-2.0.4 which is what someone originally suggested. You can see the OpenSUSE package list at: http://giannaros.org/suse/package_list/openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-i386-list.txt

Strangely according to the Package list Ubuntu Edgy (http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/allpackages) also has openoffice.org (2.0.4-0ubuntu2) did you update your system carsten?

carsten (cniehaus) wrote :

My OpenSUSE system is using 2.0.4.7, yes.

I _guess_ this might because of a patch Ubuntu adds to OOo but OpenSUSE does not... Sorry, but I no longer have any KUbuntu-System so I cannot test anything anymore.

This sentence: "Somebody just told me that it doesn't crash OOo 2.0.4 in Edgy..." was related to the other bug I told you about (http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=75517). See my comments there.
