Bug Description

I wiped my Windows machine a few days ago and installed the Kubuntu Edgy release candidate. I then apt-get updated this current today. Over 50% of the time (before or after the updates) I am unable to get the machine to boot and display the login screen. It displays the initial "Kubuntu" screen with the progress bar; the bar goes all the way across, and the monitor clicks when it changes display modes, and then nothing appears and the machine is unresponsive. Once hung, I cannot hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a terminal and have to hit the PC's reset button.

Looking at /var/log/messages, it gets past the messages about Bluetooth from the kernel and then hangs. The next items in the kernel logs when I am able to get it to boot are from gconf. I believe these appear when it does display the logon screen and I enter credentials.

Once running, the machine seems to run great. I don't have any operational problems until startup or shutdown. It does sometimes hang on shutdown as well. When this occurs, it repeatedly:
* Shows the "Kubuntu" screen with the progress bar
* Has some hard disk activity
* Changes display mode and causes the monitor to 'click'
* Again shows the "Kubuntu" screen. This went on for some time before I reset the machine.

Please help. I used Kubuntu 6.06 on an alternate machine and loved it. I don't want to have to reinstall Windows!

looks like a kernel problem, but maybe related to upstart? not sure...

I think I discovered what the problem is--a problem with the video driver the installation CD chose for my card caused X to hang when trying to show the login screen. The installer detected the card properly, but used the following settings:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. R200 BB [Radeon All in Wonder 8500DV]"
 Driver "ati"
 BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Apparently the ati driver doesn't work reliably with the All in Wonder 8500DV. Only sometimes will X start. I can confirm this with the Kubuntu live CD.

I installed the xorg-driver-fglrx package and changed the driver to fglrx and have not had any more problems. Can anyone take a look at this ati driver?

Thanks for your time!

Thanks for your report. I think it would be a good idea if you can attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf to this report as file attachments.

Note: I added xorg-ati but did not remove kernel (while assigning bugs) upon your last comments. The reason is, afaik, if a driver (or anything, for that matter) can hang the machine, it's a kernel bug. But at the same time, it's an ati bug bc it cannot provide support your specific card. I hope this info will be helpful to other triagers / developers looking a this bug.

This bug was marked as a duplicate of 67487, but after following the testing instructions for that bug's fix, I still have the problem as long as the dri module is loaded.

Arthur, have you tried 7.04 or the 7.10 prereleases?

Well... I couldn't work with it, so I bought a different Nvidia-based video
card. I still have the ATI card and if I get time I'll throw it in a test
system and see what happens.
