Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

During the upgrade process a message popped up saying something like:

Directory /usr/X11R6/bin is not empty. Installation will now fail. Please move everything out of this directory and rerun installation.

I clicked ok and after a few minutes another dialog appeared saying something like:

Installation failed. Your system is in an unusable state. Please report this bug in launchpad for the update-manager package and include everything in /var/log/dist-upgrade

So I did by filing this bug.

tar does not work any more, so you get this as single files.

This happened to me too. Need help rectifying my system. Do I just re-run the dist-upgrade script?

Would it be useful to see my log also?

I moved the contents of the directory to another temporary directory and rerun the upgrade script. A message came up, that said I should run sudo apt-get install -f and then rerun the upgrade script again. I did this. Half way through the upgrade, the x server was shut down and did not come up again, complaining that the ati module was not found. I then did a sudo dpkg --reconfigure -a. This finished the installation of the other packages, but x still did not come up. I did a sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-all && sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-all package and this did the trick. My system is running fine with edgy now. Not something you would call a smooth upgrade path, but at least it works. YMMV.
