Bug Description

Binary package hint: gaim

In gaim 2.0 on Edgy, contact names in Hebrew appear as 'gibberish' (as if the codepage/encoding is wrong).

Contact names appear messed up both in the contact list, and in the title of a chat window during a conversation.

Sure, here is a screenshot (I blurred out the names irrelevant to this bug).

The bug can be seen near the bottom, specifically the third contact from the very bottom. This type of 'gibberish' is what I sometimes see in other apps when Hebrew is displayed using the wrong codepage.

In addition, the third contact from the top also can't be read, as is the group in which it is in. Oddly, the gibberish appearing instead of letters is different than for the contact on the bottom. Both are through the ICQ protocol, so that isn't the difference. (I can only guess that they are using different clients, perhaps.)

Any chance you could test this with Gaim 2.0.0beta4?

Ok, I installed 2.0.0beta4. Sadly, I experience the exact same behavior, no improvement.

I had the same problem with Russian buddy names.
It's fixed in beta5.

Try beta5.

Things are indeed significantly improved in beta5. I attach a screenshot of the current status.

As you can see in the screenshot, the bottom contact name now appears ok (the name is aligned to the right, as it should be, and is in legible Hebrew). However, the contact _group_ is still in gibberish, as before.

I thought that this might be an issue of my pre-existing contact group preferences, so I deleted blist.xml in .gaim. But when gaim beta5 created the new blist.xml, the same problem occurred.

So, as far as I can tell ,the contact name and contact group issues seem to be separate bugs, one of which was fixed.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

I haven't been using Gaim for over a year now, and I can't install it on my current machine because of technical problems (unrelated, probably hardware stuff). So I can't test whether this bug still exists - sorry. If I'm able to later on I will do so.

Ok, thanks for the feedback, feel free to report a new bug if you get the same issue with Pidgin.
